Book Summary of How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method, 2nd ed., Polya

This book is addressed to teachers of mathematics as
well as to students studying mathematics. The
‘teacher’ may be a high school teacher, or a college
instructor, or anyone interested in the technique of
teaching mathematics. The ‘student’ may be a high
school student, or a college student, or anyone else
who is studying mathematics. The book endeavours
to convince readers that mathematics, besides being
a necessary avenue to engineering professions
and scientific knowledge, may be fun and may also open up new vistas of mental activity.

A teacher has
the responsibility to challenge the curiosity
of his students, instill some interest for problems
into their minds, and give them plenty of
opportunity for practice. A student having tasted
the success in mathematics will not forget it easily
and there is a good chance that mathematics
will become something for him: a hobby, or a tool of
his profession, or his profession, or a great ambition.
The late G. Polya (1887–1985), an eminent mathe-
matician, was led to write the present book with the
hope that it would be useful to teachers who wish to
develop their students’ ability to solve problems, and
to students who are keen on developing their own
abilities. The author emphasizes that it is important
to understand not only the solution of a problem but
also the motives and procedures of the solution. The
book concentrates on presenting a methodology for
study of the methods of solution of mathematical
problems with a view to motivating students to deve-
lop their ability to solve such problems by themselves.
The line of thinking evolved in the book will
prove to be of immense benefit to students and
teachers of mathematics at all levels. Generations of
readers have relished the author’s deft—indeed,
brilliant—approach to stripping away irrelevancies
and going straight to the heart of the problem,
making this book a perennial best-seller. It should
interest anybody in any field desirous of under-
standing the ways and means, the motives and
procedures underlying the discovery of the solution.
